Gert Aertsen

Gert Aertsen studeerde schilderkunst aan het Hoger Instituut voor Beeldende Kunsten, St-Lukas te Brussel. In 2000 startte hij de posthogeschool opleiding aan het HISK. Sindsdien onderzoekt hij de mogelijkheden van nieuwe media en technologie voor artistieke doeleinden.

Hij was lid van het collectief MxHz, Machine Centred Humanz. MxHz is a multidisciplinary team of artists,curators, technicians, all have radically chosen for technological art. Mxhz = fighting a slow battle against the ancient 20th century world. Ze realiseerden een lange lijst van non-conformistische projecten gaande van genetwerkte audiovisuele performances, klankinstallaties tot artbots. Kernleden van het collectief waren Guy Van Belle en Gert Aertsen. Binnen Mxhz was Gert Aertsen voornamelijk bezig met de installatie “Thoughts go By Air” . http://www.mxhz.org

In 2002 richtte hij zijn eigen organisatie op, Lahaag.org, ondermeer om de verschillende Mxhz projecten te beheren. http://www.lahaag.org

Samen met Pieter Heremans & Hendrik Leper organiseerde hij Code31. Code31 was een open studio voor onderzoek, ontwikkeling en discussie rond technieken en denkwijzen in de media-kunst. Het initiatief stimuleerde de uitwisseling tussen kunstenaars uit verschillende disciplines en de bood de nodige ruimte om te experimenteren met nieuwe technologieën. De laatste installatie de ze ontwikkelden was “SE/30:Welcome to the 20th century back”. Deze installatie was onder meer te zien op Deaf07 festival te Rotterdam.

Met Annemie Maes en Guy Van Belle startte hij de beeldende kunsten organisatie OKNO. Deze organisatie werd opgericht als koepelorganisatie voor de drie initiatieven Looking Glass, Mxhz en Code31. http://okno.be

Binnen deze verschillende organisaties was Gert Aertsen actief als organisator, curator, producer, technicus, programmeur, workshop begeleider maar vooral als kunstenaar.

Sinds 2004 verzorgt hij het medialab en begeleidt hij de studenten van het HISK, Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten. Van 2005 tot en met 2010 gaf hij interactieve mediakunst aan de Academie van Anderlecht, samen met Erik Nerinckx. http://hisk.edu/

Gert Aertsen

Born in Brasil in 1975. Involved in new media since 2001, Gert Aertsen has been working as an artist, organizer, technician and programmer, and has collaborated with different organizations.

He was part of Machine Centred Humanz, a multi-disciplinary collective of artists exploring the different fields of technology, arts, robotics, and experimental music. Mxhz = fighting a slow battle against the ancient 20th century world. They realized a long list of non - conformist projects ranging from networked audiovisual performances , sound installations to artbots . Core members of the collective were Guy Van Belle and Gert Aertsen.

He was one of the core members of Code31, an open studio for research, development and discussion about techniques and methodologies in media art. The initiative encouraged the exchange between artists from different disciplines and offered the necessary space to experiment with new technologies.

And in 2004 he co-founded OKNO, an artist run organization based in Brussels, founded as the umbrella organization for the three initiatives Looking Glass, Mxhz and Code31.

Within these various organizations Gert Aertsen was active as an organizer, curator, producer, engineer, programmer, workshop facilitator but especially as an artist .

Since 2004 he handles the media lab and he guides the students of the HISK , Higher Institute of Fine Arts.

Gert Aertsen lives and works in Brussels.

Technologie en wetenschap spelen een steeds groter wordende rol in de ontwikkeling van de hedendaagse cultuur. Ze vormen een stuwende kracht binnen culturele vernieuwing. Technologische vooruitgang en wetenschappelijk onderzoek beïnvloeden ons denken en ons leven. Binnen deze culturele context moet de rol van de kunsten geëvalueerd worden. Kunst kan alleen aan de grens van verandering staan als ze zich bewust is van deze culturele drijvende krachten. Een actievere samenwerking tussen de kunsten en de technologische wereld dringt zich op. De relatie tussen de twee moet onderzocht worden.

Lahaag.org is een Brusselse organisatie die opereert op de grens tussen kunst en technologie. Het is een productie unit, die verschillende artistieke initiatieven ondersteunt en een onderzoek voert naar de relatie tussen kunst en technologie.

Lahaag.org zoekt naar gelijkgestemden, die resoluut een technologische benadering binnen de kunst hanteren, mensen met verschillende achtergronden, om samenwerkingsverbanden mee op te zetten.

Lahaag.org werd in 2002 opgericht door Gert Aertsen. De vzw verzorgt de produktie van zijn eigen artistiek werk en beheert sommige projecten van de collectieven waar hij bij betrokken is. Daarnaast assisteert de vzw andere kunstenaars bij de artistiek-technische creatie van hun projecten.

Zo was de vzw de afgelopen 12 maanden onder andere betrokken bij de realisatie van de volgende projecten :

• Overcast, voor het duo Sarah&Charles voor de Freestate Oostende
• Ontwikkeling van software voor tracking van dansers voor de dansvoorstelling “GUESTS” van Walter Verdin.
• Sensory Room voor het duo Sarah&Charles in opdracht van de Vlaams Bouwmeester,
• Outnumbered van Jasper Rigole, onder meer te zien in het SMAK, op Manifesta8 en recent nog op Freestate
